Employment at Classic Cruises of Newport

Classic Cruises of Newport was formed in 1991 when the schooner Madeleine began operating as an excursion vessel from Bannister’s Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island.  After we acquired and restored the motor vessel Rum Runner II, in 1994 she went into service which, like Madeleine, is operated as an excursion and charter vessel. Both vessels are U.S. Coast Guard certificated and sail from late April through first weekend in November on Narragansett Bay. We’re committed to providing the general public with a memorable perspective of Newport, one of the most renowned and scenic places here in New England. Our goal is to create a unique, informative, and entertaining experience for all our passengers. Positions:

Ticket Sales Representative

 

This is a dynamic position that is as fun as it it is challenging. Key traits include but are not limited to sales, marketing, communication, organization, cash handling and reconciliation.  The Sales staff located on Bannister’s Wharf are often the first point of contact that our customers have with a member of the company, whether it be on the phone, in person, or via e-mail. Regardless of the form of communication we aim to give top quality service in a fast, efficient, friendly, professional manner, therefore having a strong background in customer service and strong communication skills are a must. Due to our location which is amongst some of the busiest foot traffic in Newport during the summer, the ability to multi task is also key. The primary tasks involved for the front desk staff are to communicate with perspective walk by guests by giving a thorough and confident explanation of both of our vessels and what makes them each unique, while also explaining what the guests will see while they are enjoying their excursion on the bay. Effectively you are educating the prospective guests so that they can easily chose the experience that best suites them. Proficient computer skills are helpful in learning our online ticketing software and having previous cash handling experience is also a plus to help ensure quick and accurate transactions. The ideal candidates will be available for the entire season which begins in late April to early May and ends in late October to early November. Nights and weekends are required, and both full time/ part time positions are available.  This is a fast paced, fun environment and individuals that enjoy staying busy will enjoy working from our picturesque outdoor office with our fun and friendly staff.

USCG Licensed Captain on S/V Madeleine

Madeleine is a 72 foot Bermuda Rigged Schooner and has been sailing out of her current location in Newport Harbor for over 26 years. Madeleine is USCG certified to carry a maximum of 49 passengers and offers both 1.5 hour harbor cruises as well as private charters on Narragansett Bay. At Classic Cruises we believe that our Captains are so much more than just a captain. We believe that our Captains are ambassadors for Narragansett Bay,  they are leaders and mentors for their crew, they have a keen eye for safety and cleanliness of the vessel, they are aware and courteous to other traffic on the Bay and take pride in their boat handling such as sail trim, amount of ground covered on a trip, and of course docking in tight quarters. The experience starts at the dock as you welcome guests aboard, your confidence and how you handle the vessel from leaving the slip to setting sail will play a large roll in the guests comfort. While we are in the sailing industry we are also in the hospitality industry and as the captain you and the crew have one of the largest impacts on a guests experience. Being friendly and knowledgeable about the area, engaging guests in conversation and providing top notch service all while providing an outstanding sail and keeping in mind the guests and crews safety are imperative. Ideal candidates will have previous experience as a captain, strong leadership qualities, professional appearance, superior boat handling capabilities, and enjoy public speaking. A USCG 50 ton Captains License with sailing endorsement is required to be considered for this position. You must also be able to pass a pre-employment DOT drug test and enroll in our random drug screening program. Our Season runs from late April until early November and candidates should be available for the entire season.

Built in 1929 during Prohibition to smuggle rum , she was built for cargo capacity and speed. Rum Runner II is USCG certified to carry 49 passengers and today offers 75 minute fully narrated tours of Narragansett Bay and private charters. At Classic Cruises we believe that our Captains are so much more than just a captain. We believe that our Captains are ambassadors for Narragansett Bay,  they are leaders and mentors for their crew, they have a keen eye for safety and cleanliness of the vessel, they are aware and courteous to other traffic on the Bay and take pride in their boat handling skills. The experience starts at the dock as you welcome guests aboard and help them find a seat. While we are in the yachting industry we are also in the hospitality industry and as the captain you and the crew have one of the largest impacts on a guests experience. Madeleine is run by one captain and two crew members, so working as part of a team is important. The captain may set the course but the crew set the sails, working together to ensure that the guests experience is fun, enjoyable and safe. The crew have many different responsibilities which include but are not limited to general maintenance, cleaning, sail handling, responsible beverage service, narration and entertaining. While we do not offer a formal narration aboard Madeleine we certainly high light some of the major points of interest while we are underway so general knowledge of the bay is helpful and the ability to talk in front of large groups is key as we are as much in the business of hospitality as we are sailing. Previous sailing experience is required as our season is short and extremely busy, we can not teach sailing but can help hone some ones skills that already understand the fundamentals. We invite fun loving, energetic, outdoor enthusiasts to join our team. The ideal candidates will be available for the entire season which begins in late April to early May and ends in late October to early November. Nights and weekends are required, and both full time/ part time positions are available.

On board Rum Runner II we offer fully narrated cruises of Narragansett Bay so general knowledge of the surrounding area and the ability to talk comfortably in front of large groups on a microphone are imperative. We also offer a variety of refreshments aboard playing deeper into the hospitality side of the job. We invite fun loving, energetic, outdoor enthusiasts to join our team. The ideal candidates will have previous boating experience and be available for the entire season which begins in late April to early May and ends in late October to early November. Nights and weekends are required, and both full time/ part time positions are available.
